The origins of the movement are elaborated on in chapter 2, “Pentecostal Roots.” It was not until 1906, however, that Pentecostalism achieved worldwide attention. Too much looking to "signs and wonders," so much so that even people's facial ticks were considered the manifestation of the Holy Spirit. Southern Baptists have apologized for their racial history and recently (2012) elected their first African American president.

The purpose of ALL of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is to win lost souls to Jesus Christ; not to make a display for entertainment. Luther challenged then-common church actions which he viewed as corrupt, among them the Catholic manner of handling the sacraments, the practice of simony, the rule of celibacy for clerics, and the sale of indulgences -- remissions of punishment for sins which have been forgiven, the sale of which, he believed, reduced forgiveness of sin to the level of a financial transaction.

So Christians, it is not just some doctrine that can be accepted or discarded as a whim. Similarly, it was impossible to understand the large-scale structure of the Universe before telescopes allowed us to see galaxies. Also, many think this charismatic movement brings a renewing power to the Church. God is not just dealing with the obvious witchcraft and occultism that we know about. When leaders of the exclusively white Pentecostal Fellowship of North America met with African-American Pentecostal leaders at Memphis, Tennessee in 1994, Assemblies of God representatives joined with others to dissolve that organization and form the racially inclusive Pentecostal/Charismatic Churches of North America.

Further, Pope Pius XII, in his 1949 Instruction on Ecumenism taught that if there is to be any exchange between Catholics and non-Cathol- ics(solely for the sake of converting the non-Catholic to the one true Faith), all activity must be guided by the truth that "the Catholic Church possesses the fulness of Christ", that is, it does not need to acquire things that go to make up the fulness of Christianity from other denoninations. 13 Catholic Pentecostalism "needed to acquire" the mock-sacrament of a false religion (baptism in the spirit) for its impetus.

Is Jesus Only Oneness Pentecostalism Mormonism? As John Sherrill says in his book, They Speak With Other Tongues, "the walls came tumbling down." All the churches accepted Pentecostalism and approved the Pentecostal spirit as the Spirit of Jesus Christ. Not all Pentecostals believe the classical tongues doctrine that it is the initial evidence of Spirit Baptism. however. Some converted Roman Catholics may be ignorant of the biblical command to separate from pagan practices, or they may be ignorant of what the Roman Church really teaches.
