The range of topics is distributed among the topological subfields of point set topology, combinatorial topology, differential topology, geometric topology, and algebraic topology, while offering a broad variety of examples and applications. The diameter of B-DNA is 20 A, and there are about 10 bases per helical turn (36o of twist along the helix for each base pair). Many of the topics that I’m writing about are things that I struggled to understand as an undergrad and even a grad student, the intuition behind the mathematical formalism.

The double helical structure of DNA can be described as analogous to a helical staircase, with the two chains of sugar-phosphate bonds representing the rails. The method is applied with success to folding of β-lactoglobulin, traditionally perplexing because of its reputed nonhierarchical folding pattern. Our department has played a seminal role in this line of research, which has now flowered into a major discipline itself.
